Verrucas: What to Expect with CryoPen Treatment
Verrucas (plantar warts) are a common and often stubborn foot condition caused by the Human papillomavirus. They can be painful, persistent, and resistant to over-the-counter treatments (especially when located on weight-bearing areas of the foot). One increasingly popular treatment in podiatry clinics is CryoPen, a precise form of cryotherapy designed to target lesions effectively while minimising damage to surrounding tissue.
Here’s a clear guide to the treatment protocol, benefits, and key considerations.
🧊 What Is CryoPen Cryotherapy?
CryoPen is a medical device which delivers a jet of nitrous oxide at extremely low temperatures (around -89°C) straight onto the verruca. This rapid freezing destroys the infected tissue and helps trigger an immune response to fight the virus.
Unlike traditional liquid nitrogen methods, CryoPen allows for controlled, precise application, making it highly suitable for use on the feet.
👣 Treatment Protocol for Verrucas
1. Initial Assessment
Before treatment, your clinician will:
-
Confirm the lesion is a verruca (not another skin condition)
-
Assess your circulation, skin health, and medical history
-
Discuss suitability and expected outcomes
If there is any uncertainty about the diagnosis, referral may be advised in line with guidance from NICE.
2. Preparation of the Verruca
-
Hard skin on the Verruca is usually debrided gently using a scalpel.
-
This helps the cold infiltrate more effectively
3. CryoPen Application
-
The Cryopen is applied directly to the verruca
-
Short bursts of freezing are delivered (often in freeze–thaw cycles)
-
The number of applications and duration depend on the size and depth of the lesion
You may feel a stinging, sharp, or burning sensation, but treatment is generally quick.
4. Post-Treatment Response
After treatment, the area may:
-
Turn white or red to begin with and may feel a little tender.
-
A blister or scab may develop, do not burst any blisters as they are sterile and bursting them will allow bacteria in and may trigger an infection.
-
Any scabs will gradually dry and shed over 1–4 weeks
Multiple sessions are often required, especially for long-standing or deep verrucas.
Not Suitable for Everyone CryoPen may not be appropriate if you have:
-
Poor circulation or certain vascular conditions
-
Reduced sensation (e.g. neuropathy)
-
Cold sensitivity conditions such as Raynaud’s phenomenon
A full assessment is essential before proceeding. Please choose an New Patient Assessment appointment via the booking page if you are interested in this treatment.
CryoPen cryotherapy is a effective, safe, and clinically controlled option for treating verrucas—particularly when other treatments haven’t worked. However, success depends on patient health, the type of verruca and consistency of treatment.
Realistic expectations: verrucas don’t disappear overnight, but with the right approach, they can be resolved and successfully managed. I can help resolve this painful condition.
